Obituary of A. Ward Bailey in a February 1924 Tioga County newspaper.
BAILEY, A. WARD (SRGP 08349)
Mansfield and vicinity was shocked and grieved Monday when the news spread of the death of Ward Bailey, Carrier on Route Number Two our of Mansfield. Mr. Bailey had been suffering from the effects of a severe cold, but continued to make his rounds in his usual efficient manner. However, on one of the trips he became so ill that he could not complete his rounds and another carrier finished for him. Mr. Bailey grew rapidly worse, pneumonia developing and Monday morning about three o'clock he passed away. A. Ward Bailey was the son of Wesley and Fanny Gertrude Hoard Bailey, and was born in Charleston on February 16, 1864. His boyhood days were passed in Charleston where he attended the schools and later finished in the Mansfield Business college. He was married three times, his first wife being Mollie Urell; the second being Grace Sweet, both of whom are deceased. His third marriage was to Mrs. Ethel Strickler, who survives him, together with two sons by the second marriage, Llewellyn and Raymond Bailey, of Mansfield; four by the third marriage, Frances, Jeanette, Josephine and Donald, one step-son, Marvin Love, a step-daughter, Pretha Love; a brother, Dwight A. Bailey, of Mansfield, and a sister, Mrs Sarah Josephine Grenolds of Buffalo. Mr. Bailey had been a mail carrier for about fourteen years. and being a man of jolly and congenial nature he had made many friends, not only along the route he served, but among those whom he met in the course of daily life. The sympathy of all these is extended to the bereaved family. He was a member of the Mansfield Grange and the Rural Carries' Association; also of the Mansfield Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral will be held today (Wednesday) from his late home, at three o'clock, the Reverand F.P. Simmons officiating. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery.
