"I went a business trip to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base there in Dayton, Ohio. I took an extra day that drove north to Lima, Ohio and looked up some old records at the Allen County Courthouse. I found the original plot where James Fookes, Irma's great grandfather, lived in Jackson Township there in Allen County. The village where he lived is Lafayette and just the same size as it was back in the 1800s. Definite sign of the times. Of course a new home (built in 2000) is where the old "Fookes" home was...no pun intended. Anyway, my research has shown documentation of James Fookes having been one of the founding administrators of the Village of Lafayette. James and his wife, Phebe, sold their house and property to a Mahala Ransbottom for $375.00. That was a fortune then, I guess. And, James and Phebe moved to Augusta, Kansas with one his sons, James H Fookes & wife Margaret Trace Fookes. One can assume that James and Phebe needed a change, or something, in their lives. So, they moved. But, I'm also assuming that James moved back to Lafayette and died shortly thereafter. My guess is that Lafayette was his home and he wanted to spend his remaining days there. It was seem that since he was in that village since the founding that he would want to die there. Kind of a neat story, huh? But, I didn't find his grave stone in the cemetery. I did find some that were worn down and illegible.".
