Enlisted into Company D, 50th New York Engineers, on the 29th of January, 1864, he was wounded by a explosion of a shell at Fort Hell (real name was Fort Sedgwick, In Petersburg, Virginia) Virginia on the 28th of September 1864 to the chest, gun shot to the right arm at Halctez (should be Hatcher's Run) Run, in Virginia on the 28th of October 1864, right arm, plus developed diarrhea for his pension case. He was discharged on the 13th of June 1865. James went AWOL in the month of February or March of 1864, at Elmira, New York, but gave "delivered himself up" on the 21st of June 1864.
Length of service was 1 year, 4 months and 15 days. Pension was for gun shot wound in left breast and chronic diarrhea.
