Donella M. Ackley was the natural child of Harland E. Ackley and Nettie Burns and was originally named Rhoda Mae. She was later adopted by Charles W. Ackley and Ellen Patricia Smith who changed her name from Rhoda Mae to Donella M.

"Charles W. Ackley, 79, a longtime Newberry resident, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette. He was born April 8, 1925, in Portage Township to "Ted" and Bernice (nee Chase) Ackley, and attended school in in McMillan. Mr. Ackley was employed as an attendant nurse at Newberry Regional Mental Health Center for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and vegetable gardening.
He is survived by two sons and their families, Gerard and Kay of Newberry, and Nolan and Debbie of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters and their families, Rena and Marvin and Rosanne and Bud Bristow, all of Newberry; eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and their families, Lester and Buck and Barb all of Germfask; six sisters, Vivian Losey of Flint, Betty Miles of Flint, Virgina Dontrich of Tucson, Arizona, Janie Rutherford of Curtis, June Brow of Newberry and Shirley Segal of Green Bay, Wisconsin; and a son-in-law, Birch Colegrove of Engadine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Harlan, two sisters, Delores Ketola and Olive Schroeder, and daughter, Donella Colegrove. Friends called at Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry Friday, December 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with interment to take place in Riverside Township Cemetery in the spring.".

Friends Ellen Patricia Smith and Harland Ackley had a daughter named Rhoda Mae Ackley. Ellen Patricia Smith later married Harland Ackley's brother, Charles W. Ackley, who then adopted Rhoda and changed her name to Donella.
