March 24, 1993 - Edwin Wilner "Ed" Fredericks of Forest Grove, a retired district director for the U.S. Customs Department in Portland, died of cancer Saturday in a Forest Grove care center. He was 82.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Forest Grove Residential Center. Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery.

He was born July 8, 1910, in Duluth, Minn., and was raised and educated in Seattle. A veteran of World War II, he was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army for two years until his discharge in 1946. He married Rachel A. Bailey on Dec 31, 1945, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Mr. Fredericks worked for the U.S. Customs Department from 1919 until his retirement as district director of customs in 1970. He had lived in Portland, Canby and Hillsboro before moving to Forest Grove in 1991.

He was a first vice commander in the American Legion. Mr. Fredericks was a charter member of the Colvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard and since moving to Forest Grove had attended the United Church of Christ.

Survivors besides his wife include his sons, Michael E. of New Delhi, India, and Lance B. of Gaston; daughter, Merrily Boone of Manchester, Wash.; brother, Elmer of San Diego; sisters, Mildred Hunter of Seattle and Leila Bankston of Santa Ynez, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center hospice program.

April 15, 2004 - Rachel Agnes Fredericks. 90, of Forest Grove, died Feb. 8, 2004 at her home after suffering a stroke.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Her Life at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb, 15, at Alterra Wynwood Residential, 3110 19th Ave., Forest Grove. with Rev. Dick Kroll of the Forest Grove United Church of Christ officiating. Private internment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Mrs, Fredericks was born Rachel Agnes Bailey on May 25, 1913 in Los Angeles, the daughter of Louis and Grace (Rogers) Bailey, She spent her early years in California with her two older brothers, Wilbur and Lloyd Bailey, and also lived in Mexico for a period of time before completing her schooling.

During WWII she worked in her uncle's bakery in Alaska. where she met her future husband, U.S Army Staff Sergeant Edwin Miner "Ed" Fredericks. Always willing to move wherever the U S Customs sent her husband, they lived in California, Minnesota, Illinois and Colorado, Mrs. Fredericks was a medical x-ray technician before moving to Portland in 1965, where they lived until their retirement in 1970. They then lived in Hillsboro for 16 years before moving in 1991 to Forest Grove, where they became members of the United Church of Christ.

They loved spending time with their children and grandchildren, playing golf and traveling in their motor home, snow-birding In southern California during the winter months.

She continued to live at Alterra Wynwood after her husband's death in 1993 and was a regular participant in exercise sessions, bingo, the Alterra Bell Choir and other resident activities. She became an international traveler by visiting Mexico, Puerto Rico and India. She had a positive outlook on life, a heartwarming smile and encouraging words she shared with all.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael E. and Virginia Fredericks of Woodbridge, Va , and Lance B. and Martina Fredericks of Forest Grove, a step-daughter and her husband, Merrily and Gary Boone, Manchester, Wash.; three grand-daughters and their spouses, Traci and Eric Mapps, Arvada, Colo., Michelle and Omar Mendoza, Erie, Colo , and Kristina Fredericks, Forest Grove; three grandsons, Tor Fredericks, Alexandria, Va., Scott Boone of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and John Fredericks of Forest Grove, and two great grandsons, Gavin Mendoza, Erie, Colo. and Griffee Mapps, Arvada, Colo.

September 1, 1892 - "Mr. Lloyd Bailey, of Albany, Oregon, is visiting relatives in town. This is Mr. Bailey's first visit to his old home in several years."

July 2, 1919 - "Lloyd J. Bailey died last week at Los Angeles, Cal. He had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Bailey was about 65 years of age and was a son of the late John W. Bailey, of Wellsboro. He left Wellsboro about 35 years ago and for several years was employed as a railroad conductor on the Pacific coast. For the past 25 years he had resided in Los Angeles, where he was engaged in the real estate business. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Agnes Grosjean, and three sons. L.L. Bailey, Esq., of Wellsboro is a brother of the deceased. Mrs M. L. Bacon is his sister.".
