October 30, 1895 - "FUNERAL OF J.H. CHAPMAN. It Was Largely Attended by the Leading Men of Concord, Mass.
The funeral of John H. Chapman, a former resident of Concord, Mass., who died so suddenly at his home in Fredericksburg, Va., Saturday, took place yesterday from the residence of Col. Richard F. Barrett, on Main Street, Concord. Mr. Chapman has for the past two years resided on his estate in Virginia, occupying the house which Gen. Lee occupied during the battle of Fredericksburg. He was struck with apoplexy while horseback riding, and only lived for an hour and a half.
He was an architect by profession, and drew the plans for then new Bedford Bank, Nashua Armory, Casino at Nonquit, the residence of J. C. Melvin in Newton, the Episcopal Church, school buildings and Armory in Concord. The funeral was under the direction of Col. R.F. and Col William Harrett, the following members of the Tuesday Club acting as honorary pall bearers. Mr. Edwin S. Barrett, Mr. Charles H. Walcott, Mr. Frank Moore., Mr. Edward J. Hartlett, Mr. William Wheeler, Mr. William L. Eaton, Mr. Henry D. Coolidge, Mr. Charles E. Brown and Mr. Douglass Frazier, his partner.
The services were conducted by Rev. Loren B. Macdonald and the interment was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. A large number of friends attended the funeral.
A widow and one daughter survive him.".
