An excerpt from the obituary of William Barrett in the Boston Journal.
December 23, 1898 - "Concord, Mass, is indeed plunged in grief over the sad news of the death of one of her most beloved citizens, Col William Barrett. The middle of last week he was taken ill, and soon took to his bed, but not for a day or two afterward was his trouble pronounced typhoid fever. At first he was not called very ill, for anyone with that disease, but on Wednesday he had several hemorrhages and since that time failed rapidly and passed away at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at his residence on main street.
Col Barrett was born July 5, 1859, in Concord. His father was Capt. Richard Barrett, and his mother Lois J. Wheeler. His early education was obtained in the public schools of that town, and soon after completing his education he entered the employment of the Middlesex Fire Insurance Company, of which his father at that time was the Secretary and Treasurer. He continued in the service of this company, and in 1896 was elected Secretary, which position he held at the time of his death.
His family is one of the oldest of the town, his great-great-grandfather, Col. James Barrett, commanding the Americans in the famous fight at the Bridge, the 19th of April, 1775.
He obtained his title of Colonel on the staff of Gov. Greenbridge, holding the position of Assistant Quartermaster General, and was one of the prominent members of the staff, having several times been detailed Inspector on important occasions. After the Governor's death he prepared a beautiful eulogy which he delivered on several occasions, showing, in a beautiful manner, the high esteem in which he held his superior. For several years he had been the Secretary of the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution, and always took great interest in all patriotic events. His interest in the local celebration of the Concord Fight was always strong and he was always for making the celebration in fit keeping with the event. He was Secretary of the Social Circle of the town, the oldest organization of its kind in the country and one in which all of the prominent men of the town have taken active interest. He was one of the Vice Presidents of the Concord Antiquarian Society, and probably no one else was better informed of the interesting articles in this valuable collection than he. . . . . ."
