"ROSS & WILLIAMS - Andrew L. Ross was born in Pike, Bradford county, Pa, February 23rd 1827, and came to Mansfield in 1855. Philip Williams was born in troy, Pa, in 1826, and came here in 1837. In 1855 these gentlemen formed a copartnership, and they have ever since been known as our most prominent business men, engaging largely in nearly every branch of business, and wielding a controlling influence in the monetary affairs of the village and surrounding country. On the 24th of May 1872 they commenced banking business, which is still continued. Mr. Ross died August 18th, 1875, and his son C.S. Ross, has succeeded to his father's business. Mr. Williams has been for many years treasurer of the normal school."

"The Banking House of Ross & Williams was established May 24, 1872, by Andrew J. Ross and Philip Williams. Mr. Ross remained the senior partner until his death, August 18, 1875. IN the summer of 1878, having become of age, his oldest son, Charles S. Ross, who had previously been employed as a clerk, entered the partnership as the representative of his father's interest. Mr. Williams died in July, 1894, and Mr. Ross carried on the business until January 1, 1895, as surviving partner, when he became sole proprietor. The use of the old name is continued. This bank is ably and conservatively managed and is regarded as one of the strongest financial institutions in this section of the State."

From the Wellsboro Agitator.

August 1, 1894 - "The people of this place were surprised last Thursday morning to learn of the sudden death of Philip Williams. He went home Wednesday night about 9 o'clock and said he was very tired and would lie down awhile. His wife went to him a little after ten and found him dead. Although in poor health for a few years back his sudden death was entirely unexpected. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were held in the yard under the trees where in life Mr. Williams was very fond of sitting on warm summer days. His wife survives him, but there are no children to share her loss. The funeral was largely attended, about 40 carriages being in the procession.".
