July 27, 1904 - STRICKEN BY LOCKJAW BOY DIES IN AGONY. Little Jeremiah Hitchcock's Struggles Were Such as to Unnerve the Physicians at His Bedside. Result Of A Trivial Farm Accident.

Lockjaw resulting from a wound between two toes on the right foot that was caused by a cow at his father's farm caused the death at the Hospital of the Good Shepard at 9 o'clock last of Jeremiah Hitchcock, the 7 year old son of Hiram and Anna Hitchcock of Erieville. Seriously ill only a little more than forty-eight hours, the child died in great agony.
When he was in the throes of death the muscular contractions through his body was such as to unnerve the doctors who attended him, but he fought valiantly for life, and the physicians did everything in their power to save him. Both jaws set firmly, not a particle of food having passed through his mouth since Sundy noon, the little fellow passed away in a struggle.
Just four months and one day had passed since the boy's seventh birthday. He attended the public school at Erieville and through vacation had been in the habit of passing most of the time on the farm with his father, riding back and forth to the railroad station and helping him do the chores about the farmhouse.
Last Thursday afternoon he went into the fields to drive the cows home for milking and was chasing a big brindle toward the driveway when the animal stepped upon him, inflicting a large lacerated wound between the large and second toes of the right foot. The would bled freely, but the family did not think it serious enough to call a physician.
The little fellow had no medical attendance until Saturday, when his father took him to the office of Dr. White in the village. The doctor cauterized the wound and supposed he would be all right in a day or two. Monday morning symptoms of tetanus appeared and developed so rapidly that by the time the little lad again reached Dr. White's office he was suffering from a severe case of lockjaw. The doctor saw this at a glance and ordered his hurried removal to the Hospital of the Good Shepard.
Tetanus antitoxin, procured from the state department of health, was injected into him, but the disease had taken such a firm hold upon the frail system that the physicians were unable to uproot it and the boy gradually grew worse. He suffered great agony and death was looked upon by the attendants in one way as a blessing.
The boy was born at Gerogetown N.Y. and was taken to Erieville by his parents when an infant. Burial will be made Friday afternoon at Delphi Falls.
