6384. RICHARD FOSTER (Samuel, Ebenezer, John, John, John), b. May 31, 1768, Little Nine Partners, N.Y.; m., Oct 20, 1791, Clarissa H. Barton, who was a sister of Judge Barton of Oxford, Mass. - - the father of Clara Barton, of Red Cros fame - - b. Sept. 11, 1770; d. Nov 23, 1843.
He was born at Little Nine Partners, N.Y. He occupied a farm adjoining his father's for a few years. About 1801 he built a house and barn, at what is now the village, designed for a hotel; but if ever occupied as such it was for a short time only. The house is still standing. Soon after his father went to New Sharon, Richard Sold his property here and established himself on a farm, near his father, and there remained until his death. In addition to his farming he was much engaged in trafficing and dickering throughout the country, in anything that came to hand. He was a great practical joker, and many are the instances related. None showed any malice, but an intense love of fun. As a specimen the following was recently published in a Portland paper: "A marriage was being solemnized at the house of Levi Morton (grandfather of New York's ex-Governor), about a mile distant from his home. It was a cold winter's night, and Richard managed, without detection, to place a board on the chimney top, thus smoking out family and guests, and it was some time before the cause was discovered.." He married Clarissa Barton, of a Windsor, Me., family, she then residing in Winthrop. She was an aunt of Miss Clara Barton of Red Cross fame. He d. Aug. 23, 1841., Res. Winthrop, Me.

From the Life of Clara Barton by Percy H. Epler, 1917.
"Stephen Barton was a Physician. His generosity forbade him to present his bills to patients, and though a good practitioner, he was unable to make a living from the profession. In 1764 he settled at Oxford Center, and engaged in trading, becoming in time the landlord of the old Tavern. IN 1776 he removed to Windson, Maine, with his sons, but returned to Oxford in 1790 and established a mechanical shop. He died in Main in 1805.
One of his sons was Stephen Barton, born August 18, 1774. This was the father of Clara Barton.".
