December 7, 2007, by Elaine Van Develde - "Haskell-Ellis Estate Was A Testament To A Genteel Time.
MIDDLETOWN - To understand a life is to get a good glimpse of how it was lived. And a person's belongings tell many tales.

So, it would follow that to truly know the history of the Haskell-Ellis estate in Middletown is to take a tour through the time capsule of collections housed in the 23-room Aulde House where Anne Haskell-Ellis and previous generations of her family made their home and thrived as pillars of society and the arts in Monmouth County.

The contents of the estate were auctioned off on Friday and Saturday of last week in an estate tag sale conducted by Red Bank-based C.T. Peters Appraisers, Inc. And those who left with something took with them a chunk of history and treasure of an era-gone by.

"The home is a testament to a genteel time when people took time to enjoy the finer things in life as well as nature," Peters said.

Many remember the estate's founders for "The Hunt", which became known as the social event of the year in this area.".
