Well known local architects enlarged and adapted the original archtecture. In 1937-38, Charles K. Summer extended the north and south sides of the house. Elizabeth commissioned a teahouse deisgned by landscape designer, Allen Himes Reid in 1948 so that guests could gather in the middle of the garden for refreshments. The front porch was modified in 1953 by architect Leslie I. Nichols.

"George Himes was a pioneer Portlander. He was a printer and a historian. He was responsible for printing the early city directories, whick listed all the Portland residents by address and occupation. Himes was also the curator and director of the Oregon Historical Society."
The "George Himes Park" in Portland, OR, was named in his honor. Two photos have been located from Thurston County that show a gathering of the members of the wagon train party that crossed the Naches Pass in 1853, including George Himes.
