There is some interesting, and somewhat puzzling, info on Harry Evans' wife Lulu, the biological mother of twins Carmen and Marguerite. An 1894 Crawford County Avalanche article informed us that Harry married Lulu Betts, a daughter of D. Betts. An Ancestry tree for Elizabeth Williams who was the mother of Lulu notes three significant items in the timeline. 1. Elizabeth Williams married Harlo H. Nichols in 1855. 2. Lulo/Lulu was born April 17, 1875 and 3. Elizabeth married Dudley Jefferson Betts in 1877. I've not been able to verify everything in this timeline but it does seem certain that Lulu was born in 1875 and I was also able to confirm (with the Michigan Marriage Record) that Elizabeth Williams married Dudley Betts in 1877. So, it appears that Lulu was actually Lulu Nichols. That much seems clear but then the 1880 MI, Shiawassee, Owosso census muddies the water a bit. As you see, Dudley and Elizabeth Betts are shown. Then comes Lulo/Lulu who is listed as "daughter" Lulo Betts. Then come three more of the children of Elizabeth and Harlo Nichols - Joseph, Homer and Fred, who are, it would seem, correctly listed with the surname Nichols and as step-sons to Dudley Betts. The question, of course, is why Lulu is shown as a daughter and a Betts when it appears that she should be a Nichols and a step-daughter. None of this is criitical to our report but is interesting and does present a minor mystery.
