Margaret PETTIGREW (1877-1955)

1 Margaret McPherson PETTIGREW1 (1877-1955) [15578]. Born 10 Jan 1877, Canada.2,3,4 Marr James E. CAMPBELL c. 1925.3 Died 25 Jul 1955.4

Thomas and Margaret Pettigrew had a daughter who was shown as Mrs. James E. Campbell in Thomas Pettigrew's obit. The 1900 North Dakota, Stutsman, Jamestown census shows this daughter as Margaret McP born in January 1876 in Canada. It seemed likely that McP stood for McPherson and, indeed, that is shown to be the case in the University of Michigan student list published in 1923 where Margaret McPherson Pettigrew is also listed as Mrs. James E. Campbell. Also, Thomas Pettigrew is here shown as being born in August 1842. His obit reported 1843. As mentioned earlier, wife Margaret is here shown as being born in December 1845 even though the Find A Grave page which we have already seen shows a marker that clearly reads 1847.5

Find A Grave provides a different birth date for Margaret than that shown in the 1900 census. Her marker in the McGinnis Cemetery, Jamestown, clearly reads January 10, 1877. She died July 25, 1955.4

2 Thomas PETTIGREW6 (1842-1915) [15191]. Born Aug 1842, Glasco, Scotland.1,6,7 Marr Margaret BELL 28 Feb 1872, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada.1 Died 12 Dec 1915, Jamestown, Stutsman, ND.6 Buried McGinnis Cemetery, Jamestown.7

Elaine Bell reported a birth date of August, 1842 while his obituary reports he was born in 1843.1

The University of Michigan student list published in 1923 shows Margaret McPherson Pettigrew also listed as Mrs. James E. Campbell. Also, Thomas Pettigrew is here shown as being born in August 1842. His obit reported 1843. As mentioned earlier, wife Margaret is here shown as being born in December 1845 even though the Find A Grave page which we have already seen shows a marker that clearly reads 1847.

3 Margaret BELL6 (1845-1930) [15137]. Born 27 Dec 1845, Canada West, Canada.6 Died 14 Nov 1930, Jamestown, Stutsman, ND.6 Buried McGinnis Cemetery, Jamestown.8

Mrs. Margaret Pettigrew left on Thursday for Santa Fe, on the Islle of Pines. This will be her third visit to that tropical island, where her plantation of oranges and grape fruit is just coming into bearing, some grape fruit having been shipped the present winter. Mrs Pettigrew will remain on the island several months before returning home.9

Margaret's Find A Grave page shows that she was born in 1847 and her marker clearly shows that. However, there is evidence to support the December 1845 that we currently show including the 1900 ND, Stutsman, Jamestown census.8

6 John BELL6,10 (1808-1900) [15125]. Born Aug 1808, Islay, Argyll, Scotland.6,10 Died 22 Jul 1900, Jamestown, Stutsman, ND.6,10,11 Buried Greenlawn Cemetery, Redfield South Dakota.12

John and CCA - inscription in a book given by John to his brother on his departure to New Zealand from Ontario in 1863.

From Elaine Bell, "In October 1878 John, his wife Margaret (nee McPherson), along with their five adult children (Margaret, Janet, Mary, Ronald and John) emigrated to North Dakota. Travelling with them was Thomas Wildridge Bell, a son of Angus - this provides a link, presumably a family link, between John and Angus.".

13 Margaret MACLERGAN6 (c. 1778-1856) [15123]. Born c. 1778, Islay, Argyll, Scotland.6 Died 19 Jul 1856, Nottawasaga, Simco, Canada West, Canada.6
