1925-04-16 - "Lowell - Another of the rapidly diminishing band of heroic men who fought to preserve the Union has answered the final roll call and another flag draped casket has been deposited in the land they loved so well. Henry Lowell, so far as we can learn the last surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic in the Township of Thetford, died at his home in that township on Friday April 10, 1925, after an illness that had continued for several months. He was one of the oldest residents of the township and was esteemed by all as a splendid citizen in every respect. Being a man of untiring industry, of honestry and unremitting in his devotion to the family and friends, his fine reputation rested upon the solid foundation of real worth and will endure while memories of him endure. Henry Smith Lowell was born in Harlem, Winnebago County, Ill. June 21, 1847, and as his death occurred on April 10, 1925, he had attained the age of 77 years, 9 months and 19 days. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the 13th Michigan Artillery and served his country faithfully until the end of the war in 1865. On September 30, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Belle Gilmore, who died two years subsequently. On November 10, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Mason, at Mt. Morris, who together with 9 children survive him. The children are as follows: Fred, James, Walter and Reuben of Thetford, Edward of Clio, Cecil of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. mary Runnels and Miss Harriett Lowell of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Betty Watt of Lansing. One son, George, passed away in 1913. Mr. Lowell is also survived by 9 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon and were largely attended. Rev. W. J. Dudgeon delivered the funeral address and the remains were laid at rest in the family lot in Thetford Center cemetery.".
