October 30, 1888 - "Daniel Watson, Esq., a venerable and well-known citizen of Rutland, who has been sick for many weeks, is reported to be improving in health."

March 12, 1889 - "Last Wednesday Daniel Watson, Esq., a prominent and esteemed citizen of Roseville, died after a long sickness, at the age of sixty-five years. The funeral was held on Friday, and it was largely attended. He leaves a wife, three daughters and one son."

March 6, 1889 - "Daniel Watson, Esq., (SRGP 06414) died at his home in Roseville yesterday afternoon of lung trouble, aged 65 years. He had been a sufferer since last July. Deceased was a man universally respected for his uprightness and business qualifications, and his demise will be a loss to the boro of Roseville not soon to be overcome. He leaves a wife, three daughters, Mrs. H.H. Smith, Mrs. E.E. Wood, and Miss Ida R. and one son Daniel Jr., the youngest of the family. The funeral will be held from the late residence on Friday next at 11 o'clock.".

John registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

Sophronia was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sophronia lived alone in 1830 aged 30-40. She was next door to her sister Phoebe Rose and her husband WIlliam Luddington. She was listed as Saffrona Watson. This helps date her marriage to Thomas Rexford which apparently had not occurred by the time of the 1830 census. None of her young children were with her at the time of the census.

In the Census of 1850, Sophronia was listed as a head of household in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Youngest sons, John and Charles were in the household with David and Sophronia this year. Sophronia's third husband David Crippen is father to her son in law George Crippen who married her daughter Louisa Watson. Info has her born in Putney, Rutland County Vermont. Putney is in Windham County. Poultney is in Rutland County. I assume the Rutland County is correct because brother Enos is said to have been born in Pultney which is similar to Poultney. Sophronia travelled with her parents and siblings in 1807 from Connecticut to Sullivan Township at age 17. Mansfield Advertiser 7 Dec 1881: Died Mrs Watson, Roseville, 92 years, one day last week, mother of Daniel Watson Esq.

Russell1 Rose, son of Daniel Rose III and Achsah Ball, was born in Connecticut 11 JUN 1753. Russell died 1 JUN 1830 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 76. His body was interred JUN 1830 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married twice. He married Phoebe Orvis BEF 1785. Phoebe was born 21 MAR 1753 in Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Phoebe was the daughter of Eleazar Orvis and Hannah North. Phoebe died NOV 1786 in Connecticut, at age 33. He married Lydia Orvis MAR 1788. Lydia was born 20 MAR 1764 in Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Lydia was the daughter of Eleazar Orvis and Hannah North. Lydia died 3 JUN 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 93. Her body was interred JUN 1857 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Russell was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. see 1897 History p. 558 and 1087. First settled in Northeast corner of (what is now) Ward Township and then moved to Sullivan. See Rhoda Ladd's A Revolutionary Heritage p 161 ... Birthplaces of Children indicate migration from Connecticut to Vermont and back to Connecticut prior to move to Pennsylvania. From the 1897 Tioga County History: Russel ROSE and Lydia ORVIS were among the first settlers in what is now Ward Township (It was Sullivan earlier). Little is known of his early life, but at the age of 23 he enlisted in the Continental army and served throughout the struggle for liberty. While in camp at Valley Forge he was promoted to serve as an aide on Washington's staff, and did good and efficient service. After the war,he returned to Connecticut, where he married Phoebe ORVIS who bore two children, Achsah and Phoebe. ...After her death he married Phoebe's sister, Lydia ORVIS who bore eight children. Russell and Lydia brought their family from Connecticut in 1807, and located in the midst of an unbroken forest, in what is now Ward Township, but soon afterward moved to Sullivan Township and settled on the State Road. With the assistance of their children, they rapidly cleared off quite a snug little farm, and at his death, June 1, 1830, he was one of the best known men in the county. In politics he was originally a Federalist, and afterwards cast his fortunes with the Whig party. Both he and his wife were members of the Baptist church (they were among the founders of the church at Troy, PA). She survived her husband over a quarter of a century, dying June 3, 1857. It is stated of Mr. ROSE that during President Monroe's administration, he went afoot to Washington D.C., to see why his pension had been withheld from him. On his arrival the officer in charge said he could not attend to his case until the following day, but Mr. Rose threatening to go to the President direct, he promptly rectified the matter, and the old veteran returned home as he had gone, arriving there none the worse for his long tramp.

On the morning of October 19 there passed peacefully into rest, from her home in Roseville, Mrs. Clarina Rose Watson, widow of the late Daniel Watson. Clarina Rose was born in Roseville, April 11, 1834, and was consequently, 73 years old at the time of her death. She was married to Daniel Watson, September 8, 1853. Six children were born to them, three of whom died in 1877, of diphtheria, within a period of three weeks. Another daughter, Minnie, wife of E. E. Wood, was taken away in 1904, only two remaining, ida and Dee, who remain upon the farm. A stepdaughter, Mrs. Henry Smith, resides at Big Pond. In April, 1906, Mrs. Watson was stricken with organic heart trouble, and during the past six months also suffered from spinal ataxia, which was the immediate cause of her death. Mrs. Watson was an earnest Christian woman, faithful and true in her devotion to her Lord, and of unselfish service to those around her. Many are the lives that have been made better, and the hearts that received encouragement as a result of her tender ministry. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church. The funeral was held from the home on Monday, October 21, and was conducted by her pastor, the Rev. S. Harrett, assisted by the Rev. S. Earley, who spoke tenderly of his association with her during many years of acquaintance. The singing was excellent and formed a very important part of the impressive service.

"Roseville is situated nearly in the center of the township, on Mill Creek, a tributary of the Tioga River, and contains two hotels, two churches (Methodist Episcopal and Baptist), two stores, two blacksmith shops, a carriage shop, a graded school building, a steam and water power grist-mill and saw-mill and about fifty dwellings.

The first settler at Roseville was William Rose, (Correction from JMT - The first settlers were William Rose and his wife, Didamia Roberts) who located at the point where at present stands the store of C. B. Hanyen. Mr. Rose was a native of Rutland county, Vt., and settled in Rutland in 1806. His children were: Erastus, Levi, Elmer, William jr., Orinda (deceased, wife of Josephus Clark), Lovisa deceased, wife of Peter Backer) and Celestia (wife of Dr. Abel Humphrey, of Tioga). When Mr. Rose settled in Roseville the townships of Rutland, Jackson and Sullivan, and the country east to Troy and Elmira were almost an unbroken wilderness. His eldest son, Erastus, was born in Bennington, Vt., December 22nd 1802, and accompanied his parents to this township. He subsequently became a prominent citizen of Roseville, and among other official positions he held that of justice of the peace twenty years. He died November 3d 1875. He had continuously resided in Rutland or Roseville sixty-nine years. He had literally grown up with the country, and witnessed its transformation from a wilderness to a land of plenty. Such has been the history of many of the citizens of Roseville and Rutland. No other generation of men and women in this section of the country will see such a change as has been wrought since the commencement of the 19th century."

"A physician with wife and 2 year old son, he left Rutland, VT. in the spring of 1806, and settled in Tioga Co., Pennsylvania, where Roseville is named after him. Total of Eight children. His estate was filed in Chemung Co., Pa. Several of his family are buried in the Roseville Cemetery. January 29, 1945 - "REGISTER'S NOTICE. Notice is hereby given, to all persons interested, that Moses Crawford, Administrator of Constant Bailey, deceased, has settled and filed in the Register's Office, in and for Tioga county, his account taken upon the estate of the said deceased - that the said account will be resented to the Orphan's Court for confirmation and allowance, on Monday, February 17, 1845 at the Court House in Wellsboro. LUMAN WILSON, Register. Register's Office. Wellsboro, Jan. 13, 1845.".
