December 5, 1882 - "SAD CASE OF DROWNING - On Friday evening a sad case of drowning occurred at Saithwaite. It appears that about half-past five o'clock Coates Pridgeon, aged 17 years, a cloth miller, of Slaithwaite, left work in company with George Sykes and Henry Pearson. They walked down the canal bank, and, the night being dark and misty, Pridgeon and Sykes accidentally walked into the canal. Sykes got out, but Pridgeon was drowned. His body was got out of the water at half-past seven the same evening by a man named Dan Brown.".
