August 25, 1938 - "The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Vanderhoof gave them a real surprise last Friday evening with a picnic supper and shower at Woodland Park, Wellsboro. They received many lovely and useful presents. About 60 people were present. Mr. and Mrs. Vanderhoof lost their clothes and everything last week when their gas station, store and living rooms adjoining were completely destroyed by fire of unknown origin."

January 12, 1939 - "The gas station and home of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Vanderhoof at Stokesdale, which was burned to the ground a few months ago, has been reconstructed and is in operating condition. The building was moved from State lands near Morris and rebuilt in the present structure with the help of relatives and interested parties. Mr. and Mrs. Vanderhoof lost all their wedding presents, including money set aside to buy furniture in the fir which burned their home.".
