The many friends of Mrs. Harriet Rice Birks, wife of William T. Birks, will be grieved to learn that she died of cancer Saturday, October 14, 1911, at Reno, Nevada, where she was buried.

The family moved to Madeline Plains, California, in 1908, but resided there only one year when they returned as far as Reno and settled there. She leaves a husband, seven children, a father and considerable number of other relatives to mourn her sad loss.

Her father, William K. Rice, if Centreville is a pioneer of 1847 and is nearly 90 years old. He had two wives, both dead, and there were twenty four children. Mrs. Birks was a little over forty-four years old, was born in Farmington, June 1, 1907, married in 1888 and moved to Salt Lake City in 1900; from there she went to California eight years later. All of the children and several of her brothers and sisters attended the funeral.

She was a teacher in the Relief society in Salt Lake City and was a highly intelligent and dearly loved wife, mother and neighbor and will surely receive a great reward in the mansions above, where the righteous rest from their earthly labors.".

November 22, 1960 - "Teacher Wins Medal From Valley Forge. Mrs. Angelina Birks, elementary school teacher at Orvis Ring School in Reno, has been awarded a Valley Forge Classroom Teacher's Medal for her professional contribution toward maintaining our American Constitutional Republic, according to word received here recently from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
Mrs. Birks' work in behalf of responsible, patriotic citizenship and the American way of life was singled out by the Freedom Foundation's award jury for recognition as the result of her name being placed in nomination by Miss Grace Warner, principal, Orvis Ring School; Miss Valentine Olds and Miss Kathryn Clark, Orvis Ring instructors; and Mr. John Ceseria, adult distributive education coordinator for the Washoe County School System.
The nomination by Miss Warner emphasizes Mrs. Birk's work with young people as follows.
"Mrs Angelina Birks has contributed much in the first lessons of democracy. Her classroom is organized for democratic procedures and every child feels he is a vital part of group participation and group leadership."
"Children in her classroom feel secure and happy, all enjoying freedom but not abusing the privileges of this freedom.
"Students who are to live in a democracy must participate in democratic procedures in our schools and practice thinking of the rights and respect of others."
Miss Olds, in her nomination, gives added emphasis to this same contribution by Mrs. Birks.
"In Orvis Ring there are children of all races and color - Indians, Negroes, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and all other nationalities which make up our American citizens. Every child has the same opportunity in her class to express himself and participate in classroom activities. No child is ever pushed aside.
"Mrs. Birks conducts her classroom on a democratic basis, with freedom and justice for every child."
Presentation of the Freedoms Foundation medal and citation will be made to Mrs. Briks by Proctor Hug, superintendent of Washoe county school system, in a special ceremony to be announced later.".
