Mr. Bartlett, a brother of the State Nurse for Tioga county, Miss Ida M. Bartlett, got up to call a doctor to attend his wife. He was pouring gasoline from one can to another by the light of an oil lamp, when the gasoline exploded and set fire to the house. He carried his wife to a neighbor's home where soon after she gave birth to a child. He returned to save the three other children, who were sleeping upstairs. He carried one child downstairs and then went up for the other two. By this time the house was a seething furnace. He reached the bedroom where the children were sleeping and started down the stairs, but before he reached the bottom the stairs collapsed, hurling him and the children to the floor below.
Neighbors immediately rushed the three to the hospital. Mr. Bartlett was burned about the face, neck and head, and his hair was burned off. His daughters were also painfully burned about the head and neck."
