Note from David Gustner:
William Walkley's WWI Registration reports that he was born July 23, 1899 but there is some confusion about this. The Headstone Applications for Military Veterans record shows a birth date of August 30, 1899. He died March 20, 1963. Burial in Vista Memorial Gardens in Hialeah, Florida. Find A Grave shows that this cemetery is now located in Miami Lakes, Florida. It also confirms the August 30 birth date. The Florida Death Index shows that he died in Broward, Florida.

79. William H. Walkley, son of Asahel and Eliza - - - - Walkley, was born in LeRoy, 1841. This birthdate is from the 1860 census for LeRoy but his tombstone says 1837. He married - - - - O'Neil.
William H. Wakeley, or Uncle Bill or Aged Bill, as he was known about LeRoy, was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion, Co. D., 151 Regiment, New York Infantry. William was a character about LeRoy and he loved his bottle. He was well known and not much attention was paid to him or his drinking. A story is told about him going to Rochester, N.Y. and the police picked him up for vagrancy. Uncle Bill said "You can't do this to me. Don't you know who I am?" He reminded them he was a "privileged character". They replied, "You may be a privileged character in LeRoy but you are not in Rochester." Under the date line of Sept. 21, 1910, the Democrat and Chronicle states he was arrested the week before because he went to sleep on a veranda and was sentenced to sixty-one days in the Monroe County Penitentiary but arrived home the night before, having been released, pending an appeal of his case. Bond to the amount of $400.00 was furnished by John Heimlich and P.H. Gallagher. Many people in LeRoy thought his sentence too severe as he was a veteran and harmless. A petition for his release was signed by a large number of LeRoyans. As far as I could learn he stayed thereafter in LeRoy and remained its "Privileged Character". He delighted to tell about his war services and show his war badge and ribbon.
Wm.H. Walkley died November 21, 1923 and is buried in East Main Road cemetery, LeRoy, N.Y. An 1861-1864 marker and flag is on his grave. His company and regiment number on his tombstone.

September 21, 1910 - Walkley Out on Bonds.
William Walkley, a veteran of the Civil War, was taken into custody on Wednesday night by Officer Halstead. A police alarm was sent in from Trigon Park, where it was claimed by residents of that vicinity that he was sleeping on a porch. Justice Macpherson sent him to the Monroe County Penitentiary on Thursday morning for 61 days.
Walkley returned to Le Roy on Monday evening, having been released upon a bond of $400, furnished by John Helmlech and Potter H. Gallagher. An appeal was taken in Walkley's case on grounds of excessive sentence and legal errors, Justice William W. Clark, of Wayland, before whom the case was appealed, allowing Walkley his freedom under bonds. The date for a hearing on the appeal has not yet been fixed. It will come up before Judge Washburn.
Charles B. O'Connell was Mr. Walkley's attorney. A petition containing quite a number of signatures of Le Royans, asking for Walkley's freedom, was presented to Justice Clark.
