November r17, 1896 - "Jesse Burton, oldest son of Leonard Burton, met with a severe accident on Saturday while engaged in drilling a well on the farm occupied by George Dennis, about one mile east of Honeoye Falls. It became necessary to tighten a belt on the engine, and for that purpose he climbed on top of it. The engine was not in motion at the time, though in gear, and in some way he moved the drive wheel enough to start the engine, drawing his left foot into the gear, crushing the great toe and badly bruising the second one. He was removed to his home and Dr. Renham called to attend him. Upon examination the doctor found it necessary to amputate the great toe."
