From the LeRoy Gazette.
March 2, 1864 - Frightful Runaway. Another team, with its driver, had a narrow escape from fatal demolition on Tuesday, caused by the unwarrantable sport of snow-balling in the public streets.
Miller Walkley was driving a pair of spirited horses through Main street, when they became frightened at being hit with snow-balls, and giving the mastery of the reins, went through town under full pull, smashing carriages and narrowly escaping pedestrians on the street. Mr. Walkley was thrown out, and severely hurt. Richard Walkley, the owner of the team, manfully came forward and ordered the broken carriages to be repaired at his expense, and then set to work to recover his own damaged team.
How long will the practice of snowballing teams be permitted? Are life and limb, and the destruction of teams of no account, when compared with the sport of throwing snowballs? Will the Trustees give this subject their attention?
