From the Waterloo Daily Courier.

February 16, 1945 - (Photo caption) "It was Waterloo Day at the Ft. Lauderdale naval air station this week when two former West high school students accidentally encountered their former wrestling coach. Lt. Finn B. Eriksen (above, center), who coached three Iowa teams to championships. It all began when Robert Lorenzen (left), son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lorenzen of 209 Commercial street, was called to the front of a class to act as a "guinea pig" for a Judo instructor who wished to demonstrate some new angles in the old art. As he was being tossed about, Lorenzen said to himself, "There's something very familiar about all this." Then he took another look at the instructor who, sure enough, was Lieutenant Eriksen. The other man in the Waterloo trio was Merlin Edsill (right), son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd M. Edsill of 125 Linwood avenue. The two boys were on Waterloo West's wrestling squad in 1940 and '41 when Lieutenant Eriksen coached the team to state championships. Followed quite a gabfest about Waterloo and Iowa. Edsill is an aviation radioman, third class, and works on the air station flight line. Lorenzen, a seaman, first class, is training to be an air crewman in of the navy's torpedo bombing planes."

March 2, 1949 - "Three men enlisted in the regular navy Wednesday, L.N. Bredahl, QMC, recruiter in charge, announced. The men were Merlin F. Edsill, 125 Linwood avenue, Quinton R. Lane, 1833 Forest avenue, and Wayne A. Heckenlively, Robin road."

June 14, 1945 - "Merlin F. Edsill, aviation radioman third class, left Tuesday evening for the naval air station at Kingsville, Tex., after spending an 18-day leave with his wife, Patricia, who resides with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Evans, 416 Nevada street, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd M. Edsill, 125 Linwood avenue."

June 15, 1945 - "Petty Officer Merlin F. Edsill, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd M. Edsill, 125 Linwood avenue has completed flight combat and aerial gunnery training in Avenger torpedo bombing planes and has received his navy air-crewmans wings, according to word received here Thursday from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he has been training.
Petty Officer Edsill, an aviation radioman third class, attended West high school before enlisting for navy service. His wife, the former Patricia A. Evans, resides now with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Evans, 416 Nevada street.".
