November 25, 1943 - "University of Illinois, November 1, 1943 - Dear Editor,
As I have a few minutes to spare, I will drop you a few lines to let you know I am getting the hometown paper regularly now. It really is wonderful to read and reread the events of the little city. I wish to thank you very much for making it possible that we fellows can keep up on the happenings about the places known to us. Of course, it might be thought that this being a university the news would be plentiful, but it is nothing about the folks back home.
The university of Illinois has devoted numerous buildings to the naval training program. There are three units of the Navy here, the signal, the diesel and the V-12s. To further crowd the city there are soldiers of the ASTP and other groups stationed here. Saturday night it is really a service center.
I would appreciate it very much if you could give me the address of Merle L. Smith and Maxwell Hughes, both local boys. I would like to hear from them, but we don't have each others' address.
Well, I guess I must finish as it is nearly time for taps. Thanks again for the paper and keep it coming. Here's wishing all my buddies lots of luck and see you soon. Jim Edsill.
