This is a pretty nice place. We have plenty of pine trees, but no palms like there were at Guam. I am so sorry not to have seen Robert Gavette, but had to leave on short notice and now I'm about fourteen hundred miles from him, so don't think he will be able to get over to see me now.""

On the missoin at Nagashaki on of the planes just ahead of us got a direct hit in the pilot's compartment, killing about four of the men. They started to dive and about half way down the plane blew up, and I was watching all this from the nose turret, which sure did upset me terribly to see our buddies going down and no way to get them out alive. We may be on our way home by the time you get this letter."".
