1 John BELL1 (c. 1857-bef1900) [15141]. Born c. 1857, Canada West, Canada.1 Died bef 1900, Redfield, Spink, SD.1

From the Jamestown Weekly Alert (Jamestown, ND), March 2, 1880, an early history retrospective.

"April 25th, 1878, John Bell, Jr., gazed for the first time upon the fair valley of the James; he came from Collingwood, Ontario, Canada; took up claims two and a half miles north of town on the Pipestem; and in the fall of the same year, his parents, two sisters and brother, Ronald Bell, followed him. They have all taken claims in the vicinity of each otherand now have one of the nicest and best equipped farms in the county. The first year, John BVell, jr., broke forth acres: he did his work in season, in a good workmanlike manner, and sowed his seed in time in the spring of '79. The result of which care and attention he raised thirty bushels of wheat to the acre last fall and has made himself the premium farmer in Stutsman county.
Niel Bell, one of oure constables, came in company with John B., jr. from Stayner, Ontario, Canada.: He took up a claim three miles north of town and is one of our most efficient men of labor to help in the time of need.".

From the Jamestown Weekly Alert, July 11, 1878.

"John Bell and Geo W. Vennum, mentioned in our last as having gone in search of a stray yoke of cattle, after passing old Ft. Ransom, distant 50 miles south-east, came up with the runaways, who were making a straight shoot for their old home in Minnesota, and the next day returned with them, having made a round trip of 110 miles in 42 hours. All, both men and beasts were throroughly tired, the runaways especially so, and we do not think they assay another runaway for some time.".

John and CCA - inscription in a book given by John to his brother on his departure to New Zealand from Ontario in 1863.

From Elaine Bell, "In October 1878 John, his wife Margaret (nee McPherson), along with their five adult children (Margaret, Janet, Mary, Ronald and John) emigrated to North Dakota. Travelling with them was Thomas Wildridge Bell, a son of Angus - this provides a link, presumably a family link, between John and Angus.".
