"In 1836 one of Rose's horses was stolen, and he printed posters offering a reward for capture of the thief. His descendents still have one of the posters."

From the Birmingham Eccentric, January 14, 1881 - "The hotel of V. M. Rose on the gravel road one mile from this place [RO] caught fire from a defective chimney at eleven o'clock, and burned to the ground Monday night, the family barely escaping with their lives. Loss estimated at $5,000, with no insurance."

1876-12-06 - "Enoch Brown, who was arrested in Detroit a few days ago for stealing three chickens from V.M. Rose, of this place [Royal Oak], was arrested before Squire Russell and sentenced to ninety days in the Detroit House of Corrections.

1877-11-28 - "Miss Josephine Newman died at the residence of V.M. Rose, in Royal Oak, Nov. 25th. The remains will be taken to Onondaga for interment."

1881-02-16 - "The Gregory brothers of New York city are stopping at V. M. Rose's."

1881-04-13 - "Virgil Rose is about to erect a new building on the grounds of the old Rose Hotel at Royal Oak."

1881-10-19 - "Mr. Virgil Rose has been erecting an addition to his barn."

1884-07-23 - "V. M. Rose is dangerously ill."

1885-08-25 - "V.M. Rose's people are making money and at the same time gaining a reputation for pure cussedness, by shutting up cattle belonging to poor people."

1885-08-25 - "During a wind storm, the other day V. M. Rose's summer kitchen was blown down and Miss Harriet Carew, received serious injuries."

1885-09-02 - "The co-partnership heretofore existing between Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox and V. M. Rose has been disolved by mutual consent."

1887--2-09 - "Circuit Court - Wm. H. Stevens vs. Virgil M. Rose, twenty days given to settle bill of exceptions and proceedings stayed."

1893-11-09 - "V.M. Rose had a cow stolen out of a field one evening last week."

1894-06-01 - "V. M. Rose has been on the sick list, but is now better."

1894-06-15 - "V. M. Rose died Thursday evening June 7th. Further notice next week."

1894-07-26 - "Mark S. Brewer and Arthur R. Tripp are commissioners on claims in the estate of Virgil M. Rose."


Obituary from the Oakland County Post, Friday, June 22, 1894.

"Died, at his residence in this village Thursday, June 7th, 1894 at 10:30 o'clock p.m., Virgil M. Rose, aged 86 years. He retired to his bed about 10 o'clock feeling exceedingly well, in fact, better than he had for some time past. He ate a hearty supper and was cracking jokes with members of the family in the early part of the evening. Mrs. C.J. Gregory, his grand-daughter had to pass by his room later in the evening and was horrified to find him dead. He had only been dead a few moments when found. Justice Stors empaneled a jury which, after viewing the remains rendered a verdict that the deceased came to his death from the effects of old age. The funeral was held at the house Monday, June 11th, conducted by Rev. A. Wood and the remains taken on the 11:45 train to Pontiac and laid to rest beside his wife, who had proceeded him by about twenty-five years. Two children are left to mourn his loss, Mrs. Harriett Dows, of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. Mariva Hodges of Pine Lake. The following relatives were present from a distance. Mrs. H. Dows, of Cleveland, Mariva A. Hodges of Pine Lake and Wm. Saunders of Howell. Deceased was born in Manchester, Vt., in 1808 where he lived until he was 11 years of age. He then moved with his parents to Roseville, Pa., removed from Roseville to Detroit in 1834, came to Royal Oak in 1835 and purchased a large tract of land from the government and has resided here ever since. There was seven children in his father's family, five boys and two girls, all of whom have passed away. Mr. Rose was one of the oldest pioneers in the county, having lived to see it advance from a howling wilderness in the 30's, infested by Indians and wild animals, to what it is at the present time, one of the best agricultural counties in the state."

"The Pleasant Ridge village commission last night awarded a contract to R.D. Baker Company for the paving of Virgil Rose avenue." There is, unfortunately, no longer a street by that name in Pleasant Ridge.

Notes from Margaret Amey: "Pioneers of Bradford Co." says that Martin Rose got land in Penn. in 1815 from brother William. He had settled there in 1806 and the area was named Roseville for him. Martin died in 1824 and brother Joel adm. his estate. Rufus Lemon was appt. guardian of the children. It is possible that this Joel may have lived in the same location for awhile.

Joel was appointed administrator of his father's estate 3-27-1782, and one of the appraisers of the estate of brother Arra, 3-29-1785. A Pvt.in the Rev. War, his name is on a monument in Manchester dedicated to the men who fought in all the wars. He was a patriot, apparently influenced by his wife's family, while his father and some brothers were Loyalists. He and Rachel had ten children, born 1774 to 1794. These included Isaac, Joel Jr., Hannah, William, Peter, Martin, Ezra, Levi,Levicy, and Oharrey. He is on the Census for Manchester, 1790, 2 males over 16, 6 males under 16, and 3 females. He was evidently still inManchester on 9-29-1800, as a horse was reported strayed or stolen from him on that date, although he is not in Census for that year. The family removed to Onondaga County soon after. Son William had Roseville, Pa. named after him (Life in Roseville :A Socio-Historical Portrait, BaileyPrinting Co., 1973). Joel's Tombstone, located in the Rose Family Burying Ground near Baldwinsville, is inscribed "In Memory of Joel Rose who died 31 Aug. 1819 in the 72 yr. of his age". Birthdate is from a family bible. Levi was appointed administrator of his estate, 9-7-1819.

From Margaret Amey: "The baptism of Joel Rose 2 Mar 1748 in New Milford is said to have come from a family Bible not public records. In 1930 the Bible was viewed or owned by a descendant Mrs Nora Palmer in New York city. ".

"The first log house in Manchester is said to have been built by Samuel Rose, the Tory, in 1764 in the southwest section of the town close to Mount Equinox. In 1769 Rose also built the first framed house of the settlement."

Manchester, Vermont. It is said that Samuel Rose built the first building on the farm now owned by Hon. J.S. Pettibone, probably about 1764-5. He also built the first frame house 1n 1789, at which time almost all of the inhabitants were from Dutchess County. Samuel Rose was appointed to act on committee with regard to the title of the New Hampshire Grants of land-title in dispute. (Mar. 12, 1776, see Vol. I, Vermont Historical Gaziteer, p. 192).

Sarah is identified from the distribution of Samuel's estate,administered by son Joel, and subsequent records of the HistoricalSociety. She apparently lived to an old age (Pettibone manuscript,Vermont Hist. Soc., 1930) Later, in a sale of her land, she signed byher mark. There was undelivered mail for her in Manchester up to 1800.Once thought to be from the Marsh family, proof of Reynolds was locatedin 2000. Greenwich Conn. Land Records indicate she and sister Hannahinherited land from their father, Peter, in 1748-49, some of which theysell in 1752-53.

She was the daughter of John Roberts and Susanna Mayhew of Manchester, who came from Rhode Island via Nine Partners, NY. John was a Whig. Rachel had five brothers: Peter, John, William, Benjamin and Christopher. One sister, Jemina. Peter was involved in the sale of cattle belonging to Samuel Rose II, 5-14-1787. Rachel's Tombstone, located in the Rose Family Burying Ground near Baldwinsville, is inscribed "In Memory of Rachel wife of Joel Rose who died 29 July 1819 in the 68th year of her age". Birthdate is from a family bible.

May 17, 1736, and he m., second, in 1737, Abigail Morse, of Sudbury. She d. Sept. 22, 1745, at the birth of a child named after her; and he m., third, Aug. 25, 1748, Sarah Fuller, of Newton, b. Oct. 10, 1720, dau. of Capt. Jonathan Fuller. She d. Jan. 11, 1783. He d. Sept. 9, 1775. Admin. granted at Sherborn, 1776. He inherited the homestead; was selectman in 1745; captain in 1750, 1755; appointed a committee to provide entertainment at the ordination of Rev. Samuel Look, Oct. 11, 1759. His third wife, Sarah, had been m., Sept. 30, 1741, to Doct. Henry Pratt, of Medway, who seems to have d. in 1745. By him she had a dau. Beulah, b. 1743, probably m. Capt. Benjamin Bullard of Sherborn, and a son, Henry, b. in Newton, Feb. 14, 1746; who is mentioned in the will of Jonathan Fuller, dated Sept. 26, 1759, as the oldest son of his dau. Sarah Learned; and is also mentioned in the order for the distribution of the estate of Amos Learned, deceased, Sept. 2, 1784, as one of the brothers of the deceased. Beulah Bullard also is mentioned in it as one of the sisters. The widow of Edward Learned, Jan. 6, 1778, presented an application to the Court of Probate, setting forth that she had brought to her husband about œ88 and asking for some provision for herself from the estate. His estate inventoried œ 604 17s. 2d.".
