Russell Edsill held the office of Financial Secretary and Treasurer, UPWA Local 46.
Excerpt from the Iowa Labor Collection, State Historical Society of Iowa.
"Local 46 participated in international UPWA strikes in 1946 and 1948. During the strike in 1948 the governor called in the Iowa National Guard after a union member was killed while picketing and the picketers rioted. After the strike in 1948, 24 union members were indicted for complicity in the strike violence. Wilbert Warren, one of the indicted, demanded a separate trial and received it. Warren was charged with conspiring to destroy property. Warren was found guilty of conspiracy in connection with the violence at the plant, and was sentenced to three years in prison. In 1949, he appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court, but was denied in 1952. Only three others union members' cases made it to trial. Raymond and Russell Edsill were both found guilty and sentenced to three years apeace, and Everett Hopper was acquitted in his trial. Russell Edsill and Wilbert Warren went to prison for two months in 1952, and were then paroled (Raymond Edsill had already been paroled). Both men returned to Rath's and UPWA, Local 46, and received full pardons from Governor Hershell Loveless in 1960."
