From Old Oakland County Families.

Samuel Rose, a son of the first Samuel, accepted a Captain's commission in the British army, and undertook to recruit a company of Tories; he was furnished hard money with which to stimulate the loyalty of his neighbors and succeeded in turning a few young men to his standard. But he and his men were ignominiously captured, one dark night, just as they were about leaving Manchester for the British army, somewhat in the manner described in "The Rangers". Early in September 1777, the Council of Safety sent him to Gen'l Gates with a statement of his offences and a recommendation that he be sent on board the guard ships in the North River. His farm was confiscated and soon after became the property of Samuel Pettibone. In 1812 Joel Rose was living on the premises occupied by Deacon Black.

"The first log house in Manchester is said to have been built by Samuel Rose, the Tory, in 1764 in the southwest section of the town close to Mount Equinox. In 1769 Rose also built the first framed house of the settlement."

From Old Oakland County Families.

Manchester, Vermont. It is said that Samuel Rose built the first building on the farm now owned by Hon. J.S. Pettibone, probably about 1764-5. He also built the first frame house 1n 1789, at which time almost all of the inhabitants were from Dutchess County. Samuel Rose was appointed to act on committee with regard to the title of the New Hampshire Grants of land-title in dispute. (Mar. 12, 1776, see Vol. I, Vermont Historical Gaziteer, p. 192).

Sarah is identified from the distribution of Samuel's estate, administered by son Joel, and subsequent records of the HistoricalSociety. She apparently lived to an old age (Pettibone manuscript,Vermont Hist. Soc., 1930) Later, in a sale of her land, she signed byher mark. There was undelivered mail for her in Manchester up to 1800.Once thought to be from the Marsh family, proof of Reynolds was locatedin 2000. Greenwich Conn. Land Records indicate she and sister Hannahinherited land from their father, Peter, in 1748-49, some of which theysell in 1752-53.

3 Chloe CANFIELD2,3 (1748-c. 1800) [1571]. Born 20 Dec 1748, Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT.1 Died c. 1800, Augusta Township, ON.1

Alternate spelling Cloe.

Chloe had two brothers, Timothy and Silas, who also moved with their families to Vermont. She is identified as the wife of Samuel with children in Sons & Daughters of American Loyalists, p. 268. The Rose Family Record indicates a birthdate of 12-20-1743, apparently based on the Moses Rose bible, in which the year is partly illegible. It isquite likely she was actually born in Salem, Westchester, but appears on the records of the Ridgfield Church, as the family resided in Salem by that time, but the church there was not yet built. It is also claimed that Chloe married Jonathan Robinson of Fairfield (Canfields in England &the US - Marjorie R. McElhose).
The Haldimand Lists (undated, about 1783) shows Mrs. Samuel Rose with 2 males over 12, 3 males 6-12, and 3 females under 6. Chloe Rose appears in the Augusta list of residents in 1800, so it is assumed she died there.
